THE STORY BEHIND ZAZZAU

ZAZZAU draws on the historical memory of Amina of Zazzau, remembered in Hausa tradition as a formidable military leader.

Because dates and details vary across oral histories and later chronicles, the painting does not claim to be a literal portrait.

A solitary figure in blue and gold stands above an earthen settlement, with a spear joining sky to land.

Authority is presented as custodianship: responsibility for the walls, roads, homes and generations below.

Closing ENZI, the work asks what power is ultimately for.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

ZAZZAU explores the relationship between leadership, sovereignty, cultural memory and responsibility through the legacy of Amina of Zazzau.

The elevated figure symbolises vigilance and the obligations of leadership, while the settlement below represents the communities whose lives are shaped by those in power.

The spear connecting earth and sky becomes a visual expression of authority, protection and continuity.

Rather than celebrating conquest alone, the painting invites reflection on the responsibility that accompanies power and the legacy leaders leave for future generations.

WITHIN DAIMA

ENZI examines sovereignty through the objects, monuments, built environments and figures that carry the memory of authority across generations.

As the fourth and final artwork in Collection II, ZAZZAU completes ENZI’s exploration of kingship, historical monuments, architectural achievement and leadership.

Together, AWIASE and ENZI form the first completed chapter of DAIMA — Africa as Living Heritage.
