THE STORY BEHIND DZIMBA
DZIMBA invokes Great Zimbabwe, its monumental dry-stone architecture and the enduring memory of African engineering and state formation.
The arrangement is interpretive, not a literal reconstruction of the archaeological site.
Walls rise on either side of a narrow passage leading toward a brilliant horizon.
A bird stands as witness, drawing on the visual legacy of the Zimbabwe Birds without reproducing a specific sculpture.
The passage turns stone from a closed relic into an entry point through which heritage is continually encountered.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
DZIMBA explores the architectural and cultural legacy of Great Zimbabwe, one of southern Africa’s most significant historical centres.
The monumental stone structures represent the ingenuity, craftsmanship and organisational achievements of African societies.
The narrow passage suggests a journey between past and present, while the bird evokes cultural memory, identity and continuity.
Rather than presenting historical architecture as a forgotten monument, the painting invites viewers to recognise its enduring significance within Africa’s living heritage.
WITHIN DAIMA
ENZI examines sovereignty through the objects, monuments, built environments and figures that carry the memory of authority across generations.
As the third artwork in Collection II, DZIMBA extends this exploration
through architecture, cultural endurance and the preservation of historical memory.
