THE STORY BEHIND AYUBA

Ayuba turns toward the Larabanga Mosque in northern Ghana, an enduring place of prayer, cultural memory and communal care.

The title honours the Islamic trader named in one of the mosque’s founding traditions, while recognising that other accounts of its beginnings also exist.

The pale earthen structure rises beyond a broad ochre path, approached as a living sacred space rather than a distant monument.

A rooted tree and an animated sky connect architecture, belief and landscape. The work considers preservation as an ongoing communal responsibility.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Through Ayuba, the artist explores the relationship between faith, architecture and cultural inheritance.

The mosque’s distinctive earthen construction reflects traditions of craftsmanship and community preservation. The painting presents sacred architecture as a living expression of identity rather than simply a historical monument.

WITHIN DAIMA

AWIASE locates DAIMA’s beginning in Ghana, where identity is carried through material culture, community, belief and the ongoing work of freedom.
