THE STORY BEHIND 1957

The title marks 6 March 1957, when the Gold Coast gained independence from British colonial rule and became Ghana.

A woman moves through a shadowed passage toward an opening filled with light and water, carrying cultural identity with her rather than leaving it behind.

She is not a portrait of one historical figure. She holds the presence of generations who endured colonial rule, struggled for independence and inherited its unfinished promises.

Closing AWIASE, the work presents freedom not as an ending but as a responsibility passed forward.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

1957 explores independence as both a historical achievement and an enduring responsibility.

The movement from shadow into light symbolises liberation, resilience and the possibilities of self-determination.

The female figure represents collective memory, connecting the sacrifices of previous generations with the responsibility of preserving cultural identity and shaping the future.

Rather than presenting independence as a completed historical event, the painting invites reflection on the continuing meaning of freedom.

WITHIN DAIMA

AWIASE locates DAIMA’s beginning in Ghana, where identity is carried through material culture, community, belief and the ongoing work of freedom.

As the fourth and final artwork in Collection I, 1957 completes AWIASE’s exploration of heritage, identity, faith and national self-determination.
